Hawkins met with alumni and advisory groups to discuss the future of the school. Hawkins assured that more power will be given to the School Advisory Board in determining the school's future. There are concerns about declining enrollment and the need for Chilocco to meet the specific needs of Indian students. Hawkins defended the school administration in response to recent disturbances. Chilocco will be surveyed by an independent consulting group, and specific guidelines for the school's future will be defined by the Secretary of the Interior. ![["New regulations for the Johnson-O'Malley program of the Bureau of Indian Affairs were published in the Federal Register in August 1974. The program aims to provide financial assistance to meet the special educational needs of Indian children in public schools.
