- Description:
- Classes at Chilocco Indian School will resume on Monday after a long holiday vacation. A study on the future role of the school in Indian education will begin soon. Director of Education James E. Hawkins met with alumni and advisory groups to discuss the future of the school. Hawkins assured that more power will be given to the School Advisory Board in determining the school's future. There are concerns about declining enrollment and the need for Chilocco to meet the specific needs of Indian students. Hawkins defended the school administration in response to recent disturbances. Chilocco will be surveyed by an independent consulting group, and specific guidelines for the school's future will be defined by the Secretary of the Interior. Hawkins also met with representatives of the National Indian Youth Council to discuss potential changes at Chilocco.
