The land was originally purchased by the United States in the 1930s and was transferred to 17 Indian tribes for better management and use. The legislation was part of a national program to retire low-productivity land from private cultivation. Various tribes, including the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes, Navajo Tribe, and others, received additional land through the legislation.
