- Representative Roman Pucinski has accused the FAA of underestimating the intensity of sonic booms produced by airplanes flying over O'Hare Field in Chicago. The FAA spokesperson, Mark Weaver, disputes these claims and states that the noise level of the booms does not increase with speed. The FAA is conducting tests in Oklahoma City to determine the intensity of sonic booms and whether American supersonic transport planes can meet noise regulations. City leaders in Oklahoma City have been informed that the intensity of the booms is influenced by the altitude and weight of the plane. Pucinski has introduced a bill in congress to limit the intensity of sonic booms to 11/2 pounds per square foot. The FAA is working on a report on the issue, and the outcome of the tests in Oklahoma City will help determine future regulations on sonic booms.
