- LaDonna Harris, wife of Senator Fred R. Harris, has founded Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO), a national organization to support American Indians. AIO will focus on obtaining foundation funds and government assistance for Indian groups, as well as college recruiting and scholarship programs for Indian youth. The organization will be privately funded and tax-exempt, with plans to remain lean and hungry. LaDonna Harris has enlisted the support of prominent Indian leaders and plans to work closely with the federal government to address Indian issues. The organization will not engage in lobbying but may explore political activities in the future.
