- Description:
- Interior Secretary Udall announced a complete review of the federal government's Indian services with the aim of drafting new legislation to improve Indian living standards. He suggested separating economic development from political development for tribes and allowing Indians to mortgage their land and move towards ending government wardship. Udall also mentioned plans to appoint a new deputy commissioner for Indian education programs and work with states to improve the position of Indians in American society. Senator Harris' plea for American Indians was supported by Senator Mondale and Senator Mansfield, who highlighted the high levels of poverty and substandard housing among Indians in their states. They called for private initiative to help Indians raise themselves out of poverty.
