- Description:
- Shirley Sweatt wrote to Senator Fred Harris asking for help in establishing her Cherokee Indian background to determine her eligibility for college scholarships. Senator Harris forwarded her letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, who responded that Sweatt would need to prove her relationship to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma or the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and possess at least one-fourth degree Indian blood to be eligible for scholarship assistance. They recommended contacting the National Archives for more information on her Indian ancestry.
