- Description:
- Representative Helen Gahagan Douglas reported to the House of Representatives that food prices are still rising, causing living costs to be 25 percent higher than in previous years. She criticized the Republican leadership for not taking action to help balance household budgets and introduced a price control bill to freeze prices at January 1948 levels. She emphasized the importance of addressing the root cause of inflation and warned that failure to do so could have dire consequences. Despite promises, grocery prices had increased significantly since 1946, with no items being cheaper than they were in June of that year. Douglas stressed the urgency of addressing rising costs and the impact it has on households.
