- Description:
- H.R. 10337, as marked up by Subcommittee on November 29, 1973, authorizes the partition of surface rights in the joint use area of the 1882 Executive Order Hopi Reservation and the surface and subsurface rights in the 1934 Navajo Reservation between the Hopi and Navajo Tribes. The bill also provides for allotments to certain Paiute Indians. The partition of surface rights shall be done in kind, with the lands partitioned to each tribe being equal in acreage, quality, and carrying capacity. The bill does not affect the joint ownership status of coal, oil, gas, and other minerals within the lands, which will be managed jointly by the Hopi and Navajo Tribes. The lands partitioned to each tribe shall be held in trust by the United States exclusively for that tribe and as part of their respective reservations.
