- Description:
- The Miami Indians of Oklahoma and Indiana have been awarded over $5.5 million in Indian Claims Commission judgments, representing the difference in what the tribe received for lands ceded in the 1800s and their actual fair value. The funds have been appropriated since 1969 and will be distributed to 5,078 eligible Miami Indians, with each individual expected to receive about $1,100. Payments will be processed through the Treasury Department and checks will be mailed directly to recipients. Shares for Miami members under 18 will be placed in minors' trust accounts.
