- The Senate has confirmed Morris Thompson as Commissioner of Indian Affairs, with Secretary of the Interior Rogers C.B. Morton expressing confidence in Thompson's ability to lead a new era for American Indians. Thompson, who is an Athabascan Indian, will report directly to Morton and function as an assistant secretary. He is the youngest person to serve as Commissioner at 34 years old. Thompson's appointment follows the resignation of Louis R. Bruce, with Marvin L. Franklin previously serving as Assistant to the Secretary for Indian Affairs.
