- Description:
- Joseph Burstein, Assistant General Counsel for Public Housing, addressed the Indian Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Interior and Insular Affairs Committee in 1975 regarding the housing problems faced by American Indians. He discussed the lack of accurate data on Indian housing needs, challenges in adapting national housing programs to Indian housing, and efforts made by HUD to meet these needs. These efforts included creating Indian public housing authorities, developing the mutual help Indian housing program, and inducing private enterprise participation in building on Indian reservations. HUD's current focus is on reviewing and updating Indian housing regulations and procedures to improve the delivery system.
