- Description:
- The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs is proposing changes to the Johnson-O'Malley program to ensure that funds intended for Indian students in public schools are used appropriately. The changes include giving more authority to parent committees, ensuring funds are spent on the education of Indian students, and allowing for written comments on the proposed revisions. The program is intended for Indian children with at least 1/4 degree Indian blood in eligible public school districts with large numbers of Indian children. The contracts under the program must support basic school programs and provide supplemental programs to meet the specialized needs of Indian students. The primary focus of the program is to benefit eligible Indian students and prevent discrimination.
