Description:

Ann Heller, an Indian Counselor for Indian Pupil Education in Tulsa, Oklahoma, wrote a letter to Senator Dewey F. Bartlett expressing concern about a policy that requires Indians to possess certificates of Indian blood in order to receive services at Indian Health Service facilities. She explained that many Indian people do not have these certificates and are unable to obtain them due to backlogs and lack of birth certificates for ancestors. She requested that Senator Bartlett make a formal inquiry and investigation into the issue to help alleviate the suffering of Indian people. Senator Bartlett responded, acknowledging the letter and stating that he would look into the matter with the Indian Health Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
