- Description:
- The Department of Education Act of 1977 was introduced by Senator Ribicoff to establish a Department of Education to provide leadership and ensure effective enforcement of educational equal opportunity. The Act outlined the structure of the Department, including the positions under the Secretary of Education and the transfer of functions from other departments. It also proposed the creation of a Federal Interagency Committee on Education and a National Advisory Commission on Education. The Act also established an Inspector General to oversee auditing and investigative activities in the Department.
