- Description:
- The Pittsburg County Choctaw Council is petitioning for the privilege of selecting a Chief by popular ballot instead of political appointment. They also request that the selection process be extended to conform to the Department of the Interior's election methods. If appointment is deemed necessary, they oppose appointing anyone who is not a recognized Choctaw by blood or a resident of the Choctaw Nation. They also hope to eliminate the need for electing or appointing a Principal Chief after 1956 to reduce expenses.
