- Description:
- The Bureau of Indian Affairs provided information to Speaker Carl Albert regarding a land dispute involving the Choctaw Nation. It was determined that the Chief of the Choctaw Tribe and the Tribal Attorney were acting in a private capacity in the lawsuit. The court found that the fence in question was a common fence, not a boundary fence, and no land claims were made. The court action did not affect land ownership and the individuals involved were not in danger of losing their land. The Chief of the Choctaw Tribe is the recognized spokesman, but individual tribe members have the right to elect a chief. The court's findings and conclusions were provided in the letter to Speaker Albert.
