- Description:
- Congressman Carl Albert announced his plans to seek the enactment of three bills in the field of Indian affairs in the next Congress. The first bill would extend restrictions on members of the Five Civilized Tribes, the second bill would reopen the right to file claims before the Indian Claims Commission, and the third bill would promote the rehabilitation of members of the Five Civilized Tribes and other Indians of eastern Oklahoma. Albert emphasized the importance of passing the first bill before the restrictions expire in April 1956 to protect Oklahoma Indians from the sale, lease, or encumbrance of their lands. He also mentioned the need to finish outstanding claims through the Indian Claims Commission and promote rehabilitation efforts for the tribes.
