The purpose of the program is to provide trained leadership to local education agencies to address drug abuse problems. Teams of educational personnel will receive short-term training in drug abuse related issues. The training will focus on understanding drug use among students, communication skills, leadership skills, and alternatives to drugs. The grants cover incidental costs of training and support for implementing drug abuse programs in schools. The program will primarily focus on grades 9-12 in the first year. ![["Education Professionals for Indian Children (EPIC) was started at Northeastern in 1973 to improve educational services for Indian students. The program offers three separate programs for Indian students interested in careers in Indian education: Pre-Intern Teaching Program, Indian Intern Teacher Training Program, and Counselor-Administrator Graduate Program. The programs provide academic, seminar, and field training experiences. EPIC is sponsored by the Cherokee Tribe and NEOSU and has had 138 students complete the Intern Teaching program, with 94% finding employment in Indian education.
